Port of Itaqui cargo handling up 21% in January

The Port of Itaqui registered a total of 1.4 million tons of cargo handled in January, a volume 21% higher than that registered in the same period in 2020 and 24% above forecast. Liquid bulk cargo should end the month with more than 700,000 tons handled, an increase of 12% over last January and 35% over what was planned for the period.

Handling also increased for pulp (40%), fertilizer (34%), wheat (23%), and general cargo (23%). Container handling increased by 50% compared to January 2020, the year in which the regular line was resumed with a weekly stopover.

“In the coming months, the volume of cargo at the Port of Itaqui should increase even more with the beginning of the flow of grain production that starts in March. We are preparing for the super-harvest, with three dedicated berths, two operated by Tegram and another operated by VLI ”, states Ted Lago, president of Empresa Maranhense de Administração Portuária (EMAP), which celebrated its 20th anniversary on February 1st.
