2020 furniture exports grew in volume but fell in revenue

Brazilian furniture and mattress exports ended the year 2020 with a 5.1% growth in exported volume compared to the accumulated result of 2019. On the other hand, in terms of exported values ​​- US$ 628.2 million -, there was a decrease of 2.5%, also compared to the previous year. The data are from ABIMÓVEL (the Brazilian furniture industry association).

Of this total, furniture exports to the United States led with a 39.9% share of the exported values, an increase of 11.5% compared to 2019. Like in Brazil, the retail American furniture industry experienced a  recovery in the second half of 2020, a situation that is expected to continue during the first quarter of this year then remain stable until at least 2024, according to an analysis by local experts. Such projections indicate good business opportunities with the country for this year and in the future.

Second in the ranking is the United Kingdom, with an 8.6% share in the accumulated index from January to December 2020. Despite the good score, there was a 16.8% drop in terms of exported values ​​compared to that recorded in 2019. It should be noted that British retailers face severe sanctions due to an even more severe second wave of the pandemic there, which led the local government to impose very restrictive measures of social distance and closing physical stores. In contrast, advances in vaccination in the British territories point to a potentially faster economic recovery than in other markets.

Uruguay appears in third place, with 7.4% of the total exported, representing a drop of 6.7%. Next are other South American partners: Chile (6.6%), Peru (5.1%), and Paraguay (3.3%). Relations with the Netherlands (Holland) have shown evolution in recent years, and the Netherlands came in seventh place in the ranking of Brazilian furniture exports in 2020: a 2.8% share between January and December last year pointed to slight growth (0.4%) compared to 2019.

Import origins

From January to December 2020, Brazil imported US$ 193.8 million in furniture and furniture components, a drop of 8.7% over the same period of the previous year. In terms of participation, China was the source of 77.9% of total imports made by Brazil in the period, followed by Italy (5.3%), and the United States (2.8%).

Concerning fluctuations in import values, many countries slightly decreased their exports to Brazil when compared to the same period of the previous year. Spain (1.8%), South Korea (0.5%), and Israel (0.6%) were the only countries that showed growth in the period. On the negative side, Germany recorded the biggest drop in exports in the furniture industry between January and December last year, going from 1.3% in the consolidated for the year 2019 to 0.9% in 2020.
