Trade balance registers YTD surplus of US$ 23.04 billion, up 63.5%

The trade balance surplus continues growing at a high pace and reached US$ 23.04 billion in the second week of May. This represents a growth of 63.5% in the daily average in comparison with the period from January to May 2020. The trade flow (sum of exports and imports) reached US$ 167.98 billion for the period, with an increase of 25%.
Exports in 2021 already total US$ 95.51 billion, increasing 28.7%, while imports grew 20.5% and totaled US$ 72.47 billion. The data were released this Monday, May 17, by SECEX, the Ministry of the Economy’s Foreign Trade Secretariat.
In the accumulated result for the month, exports grew 52.9% and totaled US$ 13.39 billion, while imports rose 60.9% and totaled US$ 8.59 billion. Thus, the trade balance registered a surplus of US$ 4.8 billion, up 40.4%, and the trade flow reached US$ 21.99 billion, up 55.9%.
Considering only the second week of May, exports totaled US$ 7.094 billion, while imports totaled US$ 4.21 billion. Thus, the trade balance registered a surplus of US$ 2.883 billion and the trade flow reached US$ 11.304 billion.
Exports for the month
In exports, comparing the daily average until the second week of this month (US$ 1.339 billion) with that of May 2020 (US$ 875.99 million), there was an increase of 52.9%, due to the increase in sales by the extractive industry (96.9%), agriculture (56.4%), and products from the manufacturing industry (34.9%).
Imports for the month
In imports, the daily average until the second week of May 2021 (US$ 859.32 million) was 60.9% above the average of May last year (US$ 534.1 million). This includes products from the extractive industry (135.9%), from the processing industry (58.8%), and from agriculture and livestock (38.2%).
