Food exports to Qatar will have electronic document validation

The Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce took the first step to implement digital customs clearance for trade between Brazil and the Arab countries. As of July 1, the validation of export documents for food and beverage cargo destined for Qatar may be carried out digitally.

The process will be done by the blockchain system “Easy Trade” which is part of an Arab Chamber digital platform called Ellos. The scanned documents will be available electronically in the system for checking and validation by the entities belonging to the blockchain and by the competent authorities of the destination country. The electronic process can be used to release export documents such as health certificates, origin certificates, and invoices, among others.

Secretary-General and CEO of the Arab Brazilian Chamber, Tamer Mansour says that innovation will make the process more practical, faster, and less bureaucratic. In this first phase, the sending of documents manually will not be canceled, but the tendency is that it will become fully electronic. The Arab Brazilian Chamber asks companies to register and adopt legal procedures to participate in the pilot project now.

According to Mansour, this new integration for digital checking of documents will speed up the release of goods in the destination country, avoiding unwanted container demurrage costs when there are delays in the physical arrival of the documentation. Demurrage is a fine imposed on the shipowner when he exceeds the time to complete the loading and unloading operation at a port.
