Brazilian meats may lose market share in Europe
May, 27, 2021 Posted by Ruth HollardWeek 202123
The reinforced controls adopted by the European Union on the entry of Brazilian meats in the wake of the “Carne Fraca” and “Trapaça” operations, which have not yet been lifted, may hinder the advance of the country’s exports to the bloc.
So far, shipments from Brazil have fared better than those from other partners. In the case of beef, Brazilian sales to the 27 EU member countries fell 15.4% in 2020 compared to 2019, less than the 18% reduction in total European imports of the product. Between January and March 2021, the fall in Brazilian exports was 1.8% compared to the 9.6% decrease in the total imported.
As for chicken meat, the fall in Brazilian sales to the EU was 3.3% in 2020, also less than the 14% decrease in total imports by the 27 members of the bloc. In the first quarter of this year, shipments from Brazil fell 7.4%, while total purchases abroad by the EU decreased 29%.
See the following graphs for the main destinations of Brazilian chicken and beef exported in 2020, according to DataLiner data:

Brazil remains the largest meat supplier to the EU, providing 41.4% of European beef imports in 2020 and 54.7% of chicken imports.
However, in the case of quotas based on previous performance, a European standard adopted at the end of 2019 establishes that the volumes will be determined using data from the two years prior to the first request to use the quota. This means that the effect on Brazil’s decreased exports will be diluted over a longer period of time for the adoption of the reinforced controls.
