Iranian news agencies have reported that Iran’s largest navy ship sank after catching fire in the Gulf of Oman under unclear circumstances. The fire broke out in the early hours of Wednesday, June 2, and caused the vessel to sink near the port of Jask, some 1,270 kilometers southeast of Tehran. There are no reports of victims.
Firefighters were dispatched to the scene to contain the flames but could not save the support ship Kharg, which takes its name from the island that serves as the main oil terminal for the Middle East country. Images circulating on social networks show a huge cloud of smoke coming out of the vessel.
Iranian authorities did not provide details on the causes of the fire. According to the Navy, the vessel had left for international waters a few days ago for a training mission. In recent months, several Iranian ships have suffered damage in suspicious incidents that authorities have denounced as possible sabotage by Israel – although in this case, so far, there are no such charges.
Last April, the freighter Saviz, whose mission was to provide technical and supply support to Iranian commandos in the Red Sea, was the target of an explosion caused by a naval mine, according to semi-official media.
