Last week, Santos Brasil set a new record at Tecon Santos. The record was set during handling operations for the Cap. San Augustin vessel owned by MSK. An unprecedented 5,452 containers were moved. This number of units moved in the same vessel was executed within 44 hours, reaching an MPH (movements per hour of loading and unloading of cargo on vessels) of 124.36. This operation beat the previous record of 5093 containers handled within the same time frame in November 2013.
Anticipating the growth in demand and the need for increasingly agile and assertive operations, Santos Brasil began plans in 2019 to expand Tecon Santos berths by an additional 220 meters. The berths will now measure a total of 1510 meters. The forecast is for the works to be completed in the second half of this year.
As a result, Santos Brasil will be able to simultaneously receive up to three New Panamax (366 meters) ships at Tecon Santos, which will have berths measuring a total of 1200 meters, and one more ship at TEV (Vehicle Terminal), with its 310-meter berth.
The total modernization project of Tecon Santos foresees investments of R$1.3 billion with the objective of increasing operational efficiency, energy efficiency, speed, and operation flow. The handling capacity of the terminal will increase by at least 20%, from 2 million TEU to 2.4 million TEU/year. With the expanded capacity, it will be possible to efficiently meet the demand forecast for the port, with the arrival of new New Panamax ships, capable of carrying up to 12,500 TEU.
