Meat exports fall, but Emirates buy more

Brazilian beef exports dropped in volume this year, but some countries like China, the United States, and the United Arab Emirates increased imports in the period. According to information released by ABRIFRIGO (the Brazilian association of meat producers), exports of fresh and processed meat totaled 714,300 tons from January until May this year, down 2% over the same period last year. Revenue grew 2% in the same comparison to $3.24 billion.
Among the six main destinations for Brazilian beef abroad are two Arab countries: the United Arab Emirates, in fifth place, and Egypt, in sixth place. The Emirates increased purchases by 11.8% in the first five months of this year compared to the same period in 2020, reaching 19,000 tons. Egypt, in turn, bought 55.2% less, with total purchases of 17,500 tons from January to May, according to data from ABRIFRIGO compiled by the Foreign Trade Secretariat (SECEX) of the Ministry of Economy.
China was by far the largest importer of Brazilian beef. Chinese purchases reached 418,000 tons against 413,600 tons in the first five months of 2020. The United States is in the second position, with 33,700 tons imported, 165.8% more. Chile ranks third place, with 32,600 tons and an increase of 7.8%, and in fourth place is the Philippines, with 26.1 tons, a growth of 78.6%. This year, 66 countries expanded their purchases, and 75 countries reduced purchases compared to the same period in 2020.
