Brazilian dairy imports grew 14.5% in May compared to the previous month, totaling 8.4 thousand tons, according to the Center for Advanced Studies in Applied Economics (CEPEA – ESALQ/USP). According to the June Milk Bulletin, the scenario reflects the low availability of raw material in the country, intensified by the off-season production in the Southeast and Midwest. The 5% drop of the dollar against the real in May also stimulated foreign purchases.
Imports of powdered milk reached 4.18,000 tons last month, 26% more than in April and 49.7% of the total volume of dairy imports in the period. The average price of the product was US$ 3.17 per kilo, 5% higher than in April.
The chart below was compiled using DataLiner data and shows the history of dairy imports and exports:

According to CEPEA, sector exports decreased 22% in May, to 3,810 tons.
