On Tuesday, June 22, a joint operation between the Santos customs authority and ANATEL (the national telecommunications agency) seized 40,000 cable TV unlocking devices in the Port of Santos. According to the Brazilian internal revenue service, TV Box units are tampered with to illegally view pay channels, movies, and other content. The seizure was valued at R$16 million.
As disclosed, the devices were located in a container that would transfer to another national port. According to the internal revenue service, the opening of the cargo was carried out managing the risk, with the aid of scanner images, and during an exchange of information with DIREP (the division of surveillance and repression of smuggling and embezzlement) of the 2nd Fiscal Region.
During the inspection, the teams observed that the entire imported cargo had been declared as modems for networks. According to the tax authorities, it was an attempt to avoid selecting the goods for a more detailed inspection. The professionals then decided to open the container and found only TV Box sets.
