With an auction scheduled for the end of the year, Ferrogrão should make freight cheaper

After the inauguration of the North-South railroad stretch between São Simão (GO) and Estrela D’Oeste (SP) in March, and the successful tender in April of stretch 1 of the West-East Integration Railroad (FIOL), won by Bahia Mineração, the railway sector has its eye on the tender scheduled for the end of the year for Ferrogrão, one of the largest “greenfield” projects in the infrastructure sector in the last 20 years.
The 900-kilometer railway connecting Sinop (MT) and Miritituba (PA) is set to become the main means of transportation for most of the grain harvest in Mato Grosso. Today, more than 70% of the state’s crop is transported through the ports of Santos (SP) and Paranaguá (PR), more than two thousand kilometers away.
The tender is scheduled for the third quarter of this year. The project has been under evaluation by the Federal Audit Court (TCU) since July 10, 2020. For the Minister of Infrastructure, Tarcísio Freitas, the project could create a new paradigm. “Ferrogrão has the power to bring the freight price down and make our producers extremely competitive vis-a-vis our peers around the world. It will serve a state that will produce 120 million tons of grain per year within nine years. When we started the studies, it was about 50 million tons per year.”
