Argentina to tender for dredging of the Paraná River and prepares a longer concession

Major worldwide food exporter Argentina is going to tender the dredging and maintenance of the Paraná River, the main exit route for the country’s exports, for one year. During this period, a longer second concession will be prepared, announced the Minister of Transport, Alexis Guerrera, on Tuesday.
Argentina is the world’s largest exporter of soy oil and meal and the third-largest exporter of corn. About 80% of its agricultural shipments travel along the Paraná River, the bank of which is in an important port complex and with gigantic grain processing plants.
Currently, the maintenance of navigability in Paraná is carried out by the Belgian Jan de Nul, who signed a 90-day contract in April after having been the concessionaire responsible for the work for 25 years.
There is a decree awaiting the signature of President Alberto Fernández that “will allow the launching of a 12-month tender that will be led by the AGP (General Port Administration),” the Transport Minister told local radio station ‘El Desape’.
The purpose of the one-year tender is “to give us time to prepare the long tender, which is the one that will include the new works”, said Guerrera, adding that from then on the government will charge a fee for navigation through Paraná.
