The new port of Imetame in Aracruz, in the North of Espírito Santo, received the green light from the federal government this Wednesday, July 7th. In a ceremony with the Minister of Infrastructure, Tarcísio Freitas, the amendment to the contract that authorizes the private terminal to handle different types of cargo was signed, expanding the scope of operations. According to the company, work on the port complex began on June 21 and should last for three years.
At the beginning of last month, the Brazilian Heritage Secretariat granted authorization for Imetame Logística Porto to use the 1.03 million m2 area in Barra do Riacho. In return, the company must pay the federal coffers R$ 4.1 million per year. The contract is valid until November 2040. The investment in the project is in the order of R$1.7 billion.
Signing the contract addendum on Wednesday allows for a change in Imetame’s initial project for the port area. Initially, in 2009, the objective was to create an offshore base to serve the oil and gas sector, as well as a logistical channel for outflowing the production of Imetame Metalmecânica, the group’s parent company.
However, observing changes in the Brazilian scenario, such as the regulatory framework for ports, and considering the port infrastructure challenges faced by the government, the project has changed. Currently, the idea is to build a complex of private port terminals capable of handling different types of cargo, such as containers, general cargo, and grain.
