Rice exports drop 50%

Brazilian rice exports totaled 475,960 tons (husk basis) in the first half of 2021, 50% less than the 953,330 tons exported in the first half of 2020, according to ABIARROZ (the Brazilian rice industry association), which prepared the report based on data from the Ministry of Finance.
According to the organization, the decrease was mainly due to the high costs of maritime freight. The freight price rose an average of 170% this year, reaching 500% in some cases in June. “The high value of maritime freight and the unavailability of space on the ships resulted in losses in international business in the Brazilian rice sector,” says the ABIARROZ Director of International Relations, Gustavo Trevisan, in a statement.
Imports in the first half totaled 571,770 tons or 24% more than the 461,160 tons in the same period of 2020.
According to Trevisan, the pandemic has damaged the logistics sector. “Some companies have reduced or suspended operations. In addition, Covid-19 cases in crews affected freight flow, reducing the offer of maritime transport services. In June alone, we stopped shipping around 15,000 tons of rice (husk basis), he said.
