Russia to resume importing Brazilian tobacco
Jul, 28, 2021 Posted by Ruth HollardWeek 202130
Brazil is authorized to resume tobacco exports to Russia. The release was communicated on Wednesday, July 28, by Rosselkhoznadzor (the Russian federal service for veterinary and phytosanitary surveillance). The Russian government announced that exports from Brazil will resume considering the guarantees of phytosanitary measures provided by the Agricultural Defense Secretariat of MAPA (the ministry of agriculture and food supply).
The dialogue for ending the embargo on Brazilian products took place after a meeting held on the 23rd. Attending the meeting were representatives of the Ministry’s defense secretary, members of Rosselkhoznadzor, and agricultural attachés from the Brazilian Embassy in Russia and Russia’s commercial representation in Brazil.
The ban on tobacco exports from Brazil to the Russian market was made official last July 19, after authorities in the European country identified the presence of the fly Megaselia scalaris in the cargoes, which is considered a quarantine pest in Russia and in member countries of the Eurasian economic union.
