Tietê-Paraná Waterway cargo movement will be interrupted in August due to water rationing

On July 26, the Minister of Infrastructure, Tarcísio Gomes de Freitas, stated that, as of August, the Tietê-Paraná waterway will have its cargo movement interrupted due to the need to preserve water resources for the generation of electricity.

“There comes a point, as the crisis is very severe, where we will have to make a choice. Either we reserve the water to generate energy or we keep the waterway operating. When we balance the pros and cons of these two options, we are going to save water to generate energy. So, I believe that now in August we will have to actually hold more water and this will prevent cargo movement on the Tietê”, stated Freitas.

The minister said that the ministry is in contact with rural producers and has been taking measures to keep up with the transit of barges in recent weeks. He recognizes that the closure of the waterway will imply an increase in costs, but emphasizes that there are logistical options in the area. “On the waterway issue, we have substitute modes; in energy, no. I can transport it by truck and, in the case of the Tietê-Paraná waterway, I have the railroad arriving there, I have the highway”.

The decision to close the waterway for vessels must be taken by ANA (the national water agency). According to the minister, the crisis committee formed due to the lack of water resources still needs to meet, decide to stop the traffic, and give the guarantee for ANA to publish a resolution limiting the flow.
