Countries increase surveillance after African swine fever case reported in the Americas

After the United States confirmed the return of African swine fever to the American continent, the Dominican Republic – the country where the case occurred – and Mexico tightened their controls to contain the threat of a disease that has decimated hundreds of thousands of pigs in China in recent years .
According to Reuters, the Dominican Republic is suspending swine shipments in two provinces and mobilizing the military to contain African swine fever. US tests on 389 samples of pigs raised on Dominican farms and backyards indicated that the contagious disease is in “a small population of backyard pigs from the provinces of Sánchez, Ramírez, and Montecristi,” according to a statement from the local ministry of agriculture.
Mexico is working with swine producers to establish sanitary measures and “epidemiological surveillance,” said the Mexican ministry of agriculture. The United States also announced containment measures, such as greater checks and controls at the country’s airports and the maintenance of the embargo on pork from the Dominican Republic.
