Damaged corn crop leads to reduced total grain harvest in the country
Aug, 10, 2021 Posted by Ruth HollardWeek 202132
For the first time since the beginning of the 2020/21 crop planting in September of last year, CONAB (the national food supply company) has estimated that the total production of grains and fibers in the country will be lower than in the 2019/20 season. The cause is unfavorable weather conditions which heavily harmed winter corn (the second harvest).
In its 11th report on the cycle, released recently, the state-owned company calculated that the country will produce 253.98 million tons of grain, 1.2% less than in 2019/20 and 2.6% less than projected last month.
“Although there was an increase in the planted area of more than 4%, the reduction is mainly due to the drop in estimated yields in second-crop harvests due to the damage caused by the prolonged drought in the main producing regions, as well as the low temperatures with frost events that occurred in the states of the central/southern region of the country”, says CONAB in the report.

10% Drop in the Off-Season
The estimate for winter corn production was reduced by 9.9% to 60.32 million tons, 19.6% lower than that harvested last season. Productivity is now estimated at 4,065 kilos per hectare, or 25.7% less than in the winter of 2019/20.
