Crew member dies of Covid-19 after being removed from a quarantined vessel at the Port of Santos
Aug, 24, 2021ANVISA (the national health surveillance agency) confirmed that there are seven positive cases of Covid-19 among the crew of a ship that is anchored off the Port of Santos. According to ANVISA, two of the positively-tested crew members were removed for medical assistance, but one of them has died and the other is in serious condition.
According to the regulatory agency, on August 19th, the agency identified suspicious symptoms in the medical book on board the Georgia Harmony vessel, with 19 crew members, who requested entry into the port. With the ship still anchored at the sandbar, Anvisa determined a clinical evaluation on board and testing of the crew, placing the vessel in preventative quarantine for 14 days.
The medical team identified two serious cases on board that required prompt attention. These crew members were removed for medical assistance, however, one of them died, as explained by Anvisa. The other remains hospitalized, in serious condition. There are also five other crew members whose tests showed positive results, but the regulatory agency said they are in good health.
The vessel, coming from Gibraltar, in Europe, transports solid bulk. ANVISA informed that it determined the isolation of patients, the treatment of waste as infectious, and the prohibition of embarkation and disembarkation, among other measures.
