Soybeans: Late fertilizer shipments affect Mato Grosso farmers

Farmers in Mato Grosso complain about the lack of raw materials and delays in fertilizer deliveries. The situation has caused disturbances in soil preparations and could delay the cultivation of the 2021/2022 soybean crop in the state.

The ports of Paraná are the main ports of entry for fertilizers in Brazil, accounting for 33% of the volume that arrives in the country. In the first seven months of this year, more than 6.3 million tons of fertilizers were imported by Paranaguá and Antonina,18% more than the 5.4 million tons registered in 2020. Considering only the month of July, the increase was still higher, about 21%.

According to CEARPA (the state council of agricultural product resale associations in the state of Mato Grosso) and ANDAV (the national association of agricultural and veterinary inputs distributors), there is a delay in raw material for both the factory and the ready-purchased product from third parties.

According to Décio Gomes, executive manager of the syndicate of fertilizer industries and soil correctors from Paraná, there was a 20% increase in the volume of imported fertilizer but it is being transported with the same fleet of trucks, which causes a possible delay in deliveries. In other words, a greater volume of products is arriving but the transport and logistics structure did not expand accordingly.

Regarding the lack of raw material, he says there is no record of this. Gomes says that what happened this year is that the prices of primary and secondary fertilizers increased in dollars, which made purchases more expensive.
