OIE concludes that atypical cases of “mad cow” in Brazil pose no risk
Sep, 08, 2021 Posted by Ruth HollardWeek 202135
On September 6, the Ministry of Agriculture announced that the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) concluded that the two atypical cases of “mad cow disease” registered in Minas Gerais and Mato Grosso do not represent a health risk to Brazilian livestock.
The retest was performed in Canada by a reference laboratory of the international entity, and it was confirmed that the cases truly are atypical – naturally developed by animals of an advanced age -, independent and isolated.
Thus, the Ministry reinforced, in a note, that Brazil maintains its classification unchanged as a country with an insignificant risk for the disease, not justifying any impacts on the sale of animals, products, and by-products.
