The Infrastructure Minister, Tarcísio Gomes de Freitas, believes that the creation of the Pro Trilhos program should attract at least R$ 60 billion in private investments in new railways in the country. He participated in a public hearing at the Chamber of Deputies’ Committee on Traffic and Transport on September 14th.
One of the innovations brought by the MP is the possibility for private entities to be able, through the authorization institute, to build and explore railway segments not yet mapped, several of which are short lines, and also to reuse idle railway networks.
“On the first day of the current measure, we had 10 requests for authorization. We recently received two more. So there are already 12 requests for authorization for private extensions. These are investments that exceed R$ 60 billion”, said Tarcísio. These new branches will connect production areas to already consolidated rail corridors or directly to ports.
For the minister, as well as the energy, telecommunications, airports and ports sectors, it was important that the railway sector also be able to attract private investments through authorizations. “This makes it possible for investors who want to take the engineering risk to build their branches, their railroads,” explained Tarcísio.
