Oil tankers on strike at Transpetro terminal in Santos

Oil tankers at the Transpetro terminal at Alemoa in Santos, on the coast of São Paulo, went on strike in the early evening of September 1st. They protested on the morning of the 17th and asked for more security at the terminal, which operates with a lower number of personnel than necessary, according to the union that represents the category.  The oil workers’ strike began at 19:00 on Thursday. At dawn, a Petrobras contingency team arrived at the site to keep the terminal in operation.

The general coordinator of the Union of Oil Workers of the São Paulo Coast (SindiPetro-LP), Adaedson Costa, said that the strike was motivated by an alleged insecurity in the operation of the terminal. According to him, the terminal is working with a workforce of less than the minimum necessary, causing fear among workers.

The lack of staff is due, according to him, to several layoffs in recent months. Of the 15 operators, only nine remain working in each sector of the terminal, and at least 11 workers are needed to guarantee the safety of operations.  Also according to Adaedson, the company also did not inform the union which workers would make the brigade team, composed of employees trained to act in emergency situations. “With the drop in the workforce, there is no such team at the terminal,” he says.
