China imposes 30-month age restriction on beef imported from UK

The General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) said this weekend that the UK will only be able to export frozen boneless beef from animals that were up to 30 months old at the time of slaughter. Chinese authorities did not provide a reason for the decision, which has been in effect since September 29.

Last September 17, England identified a case of “mad cow” disease, a disease that, in general, is rarer among animals under 30 months of age. The case took place in Somerset, 220 kilometers from London. The animal was diagnosed with the classic form of the disease, which can be transmitted by contaminated feed.

This variant is more worrisome than the atypical form, which manifests itself in older animals, experts say. British authorities are investigating the case, which has already been reported to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE).
