Marfrig and Minerva given greenlight to export beef from Uruguay to Japan

Brazilian meatpackers, Marfrig Global Foods SA and Minerva SA have received authorization to ship fresh beef to Japan from Uruguay. In December the Uruguayan government signed an agreement with Japan on beef exports, ending a 19-year hiatus.
US-based National Beef Packing Company, a subsidiary of Mafrig, already exports beef to Japan. The company believes they can leverage the knowledge and experience gained from the US subsidiary to cater to the Japanese market.
Currently, Marfrig has the capacity to slaughter 700,000 head of cattle per annum in Uruguay. Meanwhile, Minerva can process 3,200 head per day from its three plants in the country.
