Under US pressure, Brazil accepts methane deal

It was through a tweet that the international community – and much of the Brazilian government – learned that Brazil would join the initiative to cut methane emissions, led by the US and supported by the European Union (EU). The Brazilian government was against it, but it gave in to American pressure.
“As part of the COP26 negotiations, Brazil will adhere to the Global Commitment on Methane. Brazil is part of the solution to the challenges of climate change,” says the Itamaraty text. Officially, however, no government representative was willing to comment on joining the initiative.
Including Brazil, 103 countries announced at COP26 that they had joined the proposal to cut methane emissions by 30% by the end of the decade, from 2020 levels.
Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas, far more harmful than CO2. In 2020, Brazil emitted 20.2 million tons, of which 72% came from agriculture, 16% from waste, and 9% from land-use change. The country emits 14.5 million tons of methane in agriculture. Of this volume, 97% comes from enteric fermentation (the burping of the ox) and handling of animal waste.
