ABIARROZ: Rice exports should return to normal by year end
Nov, 12, 2021 Posted by Ruth HollardWeek 202143
The country’s rice exports (husk base) should reach 1.2 million tons this year according to estimates by ABIARROZ (the Brazilian rice industry association), calculated based on sales abroad between January and October which totaled 958,000 tons. In the same period of 2020, cereal exports totaled 1.68 million tons.
“Marking the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, the year 2020 was atypical, with great worldwide demand for rice. Now, with the disease much more under control in 2021, we are returning to normality with numbers close to those of 2019, that is, before the sanitary crisis”, stated Gustavo Trevisan, Director of International Affairs at Abiarroz. In 2019, the country exported 1.43 million tons.
Trevisan also points out that the economic recovery has also impacted logistics worldwide, with a sharp rise in the prices of ocean freight and container rentals. These factors hampered rice sales to the foreign market.
“Even in this adverse scenario, we should see strong exports in 2021; this proves to the international market the quality of our rice and the efficiency of our industry”, he adds.
Last month, Brazil exported 140,600 tons based on husked (or 106.9 thousand tons); the total volume was 3.84% lower than in October 2020. Of the total, 15,600 tons went to Peru which resumed importing the Brazilian product. Costa Rica, Cuba, the Netherlands, and Venezuela complete the list of the five main importers of the Brazilian cereal in October.
