Hyundai Heavy to establish first technical guide for green hydrogen plants at sea
Nov, 24, 2021 Posted by Ruth HollardWeek 202145
Global marine conglomerate Hyundai Heavy Industries Group has said it will establish the world’s first technical guide for offshore green hydrogen plants.
The group’s subsidiaries, Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering Co. (KSOE) and its subsidiary Hyundai Heavy Industries, Co. have signed a preliminary agreement with ABS, a US-based shipping risk management and quality control company.
The agreement aims to establish the world’s first guideline for offshore green hydrogen plant projects, which includes safety standards.
In May, Hyundai Heavy Industries signed an agreement with nine local entities, including the Korea National Oil Corp., a state-owned company, to build a 100-megawatt offshore green hydrogen plant in the East Sea by 2025.
The offshore plant will produce hydrogen from seawater using electrical energy generated in a floating offshore wind farm.
Hydrogen is an environmentally friendly alternative to fossil fuels, as vehicles and boats powered by this resource only create water in the energy generation process.
