Brazil was considered the leader in agricultural productivity in a ranking of 187 countries formulated by the agency of the Department of Agriculture of the United States (USDA).
According to the survey released in October, Brazil occupied this position from the 2000s to 2019 and the Brazilian agriculture and livestock sector increased 3.18% per year, considered the highest rate among selected countries which include China (2.03%) and the United States (0.50%).
When the analysis interval is extended from 1961 to 2019, the product of Brazilian agriculture grew by 3.75%. Despite the number being higher, it is in second place, behind China, which increased 4.41% during this period.
For the Ministry of Agriculture, productivity growth is due to reforms in the financing system, pricing policy, subsidy cuts, rural insurance, and other measures that impacted agricultural productivity, says José Gasques, general coordinator of the policy assessment and Information division of the Agricultural Policy Secretariat.
