US will not suspend beef imports from Brazil

The United States will not suspend beef imports from Brazil after the country delayed a report on health concerns, US Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack told the Politico website.

In November, the United States Meat Producers Association (NCBA) called for a ban on the Brazilian product from entering the US market following records of atypical cases of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy, known as “mad cow disease” in Brazil.

The request for the embargo followed a suspension carried out by China due to the sanitary problem which caused Brazilian exports to drop by almost 50% in October and November, according to data supplied by ABIEC (the Brazilian association of meat exporting industries).

With the Chinese embargo, the US now appears as the main importer of Brazilian beef after having imported a 17.3% share in November out of a total of 100,000 tons, according to data from ABIEC.
