On December 13, France signed an agreement with its main export customer, China, to ensure that the swine trade continues despite the outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF), potentially providing a plan for European countries threatened by swine disease.

The general ban on meat trade by China and other importing countries due to outbreaks of ASF and other diseases such as bird flu have regularly interrupted exports from meat export zones in Europe and the Americas.

China is France’s and the European Union’s biggest pork export market, with Chinese demand growing over the past two years in the face of ASF’s devastation of its domestic herd.

Taking effect immediately, Monday’s agreement means that China will allow pork exports from unaffected regions of France if the disease occurs in other parts of the country, French economic and agriculture ministries said in an announcement.
