McDonalds in Japan faces rations due to drop in imports from Canada

The McDonald’s corporation in Japan was forced to ration one of its most sought-after products, the french fries, after the drop in potato imports due to floodings in Canada and the impact of Covid-19 on the global supply chain.
The Japanese McDonald’s informed that they will sell a smaller portion of french fries for a week, starting on Friday (24), to avoid a shortage of the product.
“Due to severe flooding near the port of Vancouver … and supply chain problems caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the supply of potatoes is severely delayed,” declared the company in a statement.
The restaurant chain said it has taken measures to ensure that customers can still buy French fries, despite the unstable potato supply.
‘Historical Floods’ in Canada
Historical floods have hitten the West of Canada, right off the coast of the Pacific Ocean, in November, thus isolating the city of Vancouver and forcing thousands of residents to flee the province of British Columbia
The extreme rainy conditions in Canada have come months after a historic heatwave in the British Columbia region which caused devastating fires and the death of 500 people.
McDonald’s Japan did not inform the financial impact that the temporary rationing of medium and large-sized fries will cause.
