Ethiopia exported US$ 358.81 million in Arabica coffee between July and November, an expressive increase compared to the US$ 240.81 million pocketed in the same period last year, disclosed the Ethiopia Coffee and Tea Authority (ECTA) this Thursday, December 30th.
It is estimated that 108.036 thousand tons of coffee have been sent abroad during this period, vis-a-vis the 51.457 thousand tons exported in 2020.
Ethiopia plans to export 280,000 tonnes of coffee this fiscal year and raise about $1 billion, said ECTA deputy director General Shafi Omar.
The country has expanded its coffee destinations, which now include China, currently the world’s eighth-largest coffee importing nation, according to Omar.
In Ethiopia, the third-largest Arabica coffee producer after Brazil and Colombia, coffee harvest between October 2021 and September 2022 is projected to yield 7.6 million sacks weighing 60 kg each, according to the Department of Agriculture United States (USDA).
Ethiopia consumes nearly half of its coffee production, a high percentage for a large producer, according to a recent USDA report.
