In 2021, the Port of Itaqui handled more than 31 million tons of cargo, a 23% increase over the previous year.
In the last twelve months, 24 historic milestones – both yearly and monthly for various loads – were surpassed, with a focus on soybeans, which reached 10 million tons; fuels, which reached 9.9 million tons; and fertilizers, which moved 3.3 million tons. Liquid bulk cargoes alone increased by 56%; dry bulk grew by 12% and general cargo registered levels 8% above the volume recorded in 2020.
Fuel storage operations, primarily diesel and gasoline, increased by 189 % from 2020. An outcome resulting from the restoration of consumption following the pandemic’s most critical period, which caused an increase in imports, as well as the rise in fuel prices.
Soybean exports, with the growth in grain production, climbed 16%, while fertilizer imports remained high, being 26% over the volume handled in 2020. According to the Logistic Bulletin of the National Supply Company (Conab), the record growth of fertilizers may indicate that farmers will increase the crop yield of soy, corn, and cotton.
To continue growing in 2022, the Port of Itaqui announced a new berth, to be delivered still in January, the mooring berth #99, which will expand the handling capacity by approximately 4.5 million tons of cargo. Additionally, the expansion of liquid bulk terminals, investments in rail access, and the rail loop project (in the medium and long term) are all happening this year.
