Porto Itapoá grows 13% in 2021

Upon completing a decade of operation in 2021, Porto Itapoá has consolidated itself as the fifth largest port in Brazil in terms of container handling. The terminal’s overall performance last year was 13.1% above 2020 results after having handled 498,000 containers. Imported products were the year’s highlight, with a 23.2% increase over the previous year and a 17.5% increase in transshipment cargo handling.

These positive results reflect the recovery of the global economy after the Covid-19 crisis and the increase in terminal services such as shipowner Maersk– Hamburg Süd’s Double Call for the ASAS long-haul line. The service, which features direct departures (without transshipment) in the import and export rotations to  Asia guarantees the best transit time between Asia and the ports of the southern region of Brazil, according to the company.

The addition of Porto Itapoá to the ASAS service, which also serves the export route, has provided yet another option for transporting large volumes of refrigerated animal protein cargoes from agribusinesses in the southern states, particularly in Santa Catarina’s west, as well as exporters in the cellulose and wood chains.

In addition to serving the agribusiness of Santa Catarina cargo handling by companies in the state includes automobiles and auto parts, electric motors, the metal-mechanic sector, and white-good appliances. These segments together represent about half of the volume handled. The remaining volume comes from companies in other states such as São Paulo, Mato Grosso do Sul, Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo.

New expansion stage

Forecasts and projections of national and worldwide scenarios, taking into account the terminal’s role in Brazilian logistics, require that the corporation move forward with its expansion plan in the next years.

The terminal began a financial market fundraising project in 2021 to enable an increase in its structure’s capacity from 1.2 million TEUs to 1.6 million TEUs, one of the country’s greatest operational capacities among container ports.

The extension plan will increase Porto Itapoá’s yard by 200,000 square meters, bringing the total yard area to 450,000 square meters.

On December 17, the fundraising project was concluded after raising R$ 750 million through the issuance of incentivized debentures, a process coordinated by BTG, with the participation of XP.
