Week 202202

In December 2021, the volume of bulk cargo carried through the East Export Corridor at the Port of Paranaguá (Corex) was about 56% higher than the same period the previous year.

The complex shipped 1,039,992 tons of soybeans, bran, and corn in the last month of 2021, compared to 667,082 tons in the same month the previous year.

Weather conditions, international prices, and market behavior (supply x demand), according to Luiz Fernando Garcia, CEO of Portos do Paraná, are the key factors that influence cargo handling, in addition to the performance of the terminals that operate through the complex. “This pattern is clear when we compare the numbers, mostly of soybeans and corn, of December 2020 and December 2021,” Garcia explains.

In December 2020, there was no recorded shipment of soybeans in the East Export Corridor. That month, through the complex, 254,130 tons of soybean bran and 412,952 tons of corn were exported. On the other hand, in December 2021, 586,233 tons of soybeans were shipped; as well as 390,371 tons of soy bran, and 63,388 tons of corn. The latter experienced a decrease in production in 2021, due to the drought that endangered the crops.

Port Operations

Corex’s three mooring berths (212, 213, and 214) received a total of 19 ships in December last year. In the same month, in 2020, only 12 ships berthed.

In December 2021. the complex’s most productive berth was mooring berth 213, where nine ships docked in 31 days, carrying a total of 573,260 tons of cargo. Meanwhile, 129,501 tons of solid bulk were shipped at berth 212, and another 337,230 tons were exported through berth 213.

About 17.66% of the 1,039,992 tons shipped at Corex in the last month of 2021, that is, 183,631 tons, exited the public silos (one vertical and four horizontal). The remaining eleven terminals in the complex shipped 82.34 % of the cargo.

Transportaiton modals

Trucks made up the majority of the modal participation in bulk unloading at Corex. 21,125 vehicles went through the Sorting Yard in December 2021 on their way to the Eastern Corridor terminals to unload bulk cargoes. In the same month in 2020, there were 10,504 trucks. In December 2021, 6,576 wagons were unloaded compared to 6,540 of them in December 2020.
