The year 2021 came to a close festively at the Port of Recife. In the month of December, cargo handling increased by 30.37 % in the monthly calculation and 1.96 % in the yearly calculation. In December, about 147,810 tons were handled, bringing the total for the year to 1,306,452.
These figures are mostly owing to an increase of 8.66 percent in import rates, which totaled 1,304,410 tons in 2019, surpassing the 951,931 tons recorded in 2020.
Sugar continues to be the most commonly handled load, followed by barley malt, corn, and metallurgical material.
Pernambuco’s sweetener finished the year with 317,395 tonnes handled, which includes 136,235 tonnes of bulk sugar and 181,160 tonnes of bagged sugar. Bulk sugar increased by 51.59%, while bagged sugar increased by 14.44%, compared to the previous year. The principal export product of the Port of Recife is the “white gold” which leaves the state’s mills in order to sail to nations such as the United States, Canada, Romania, and, most importantly, the African continent.
Barley malt ranked second in terms of handling with 248,822 tonnes unloaded, an 18.29% growth. The malt that arrives in the capital of Pernambuco is mainly headed to the brewery hub, serving industries such as AmBev, Heineken, and Petrópolis.
Corn was the third most popular product. The cargo is used to supply the chicken businesses in Pernambuco, including Mauricéa, Notaro, and Asa, as well as Guaraves, which is located in Paraíba. In 2021, the Recife anchorage handled 81,978 tons of grain, an increase of 32.20 percent over the previous year.
Metallurgical material was fourth on the list, although it had the most cumulative growth. It increased by 172.53 % from 8,693 tons in 2020 to 23,691 tons. This category includes steel coils, which are used to supply the state’s metallurgical industry.
