A six-institution operation resulted in the seizure of 130 kg of cocaine hidden in a compartment below the waterline of a ship in the Port of Santos, on the coast of So Paulo. The vessel was bound for Belgium.
According to the Port of Santos Customs information, the operation took place on the 27th. It involved the Federal Revenue Service, the Federal Police, the 21st Military Police Battalion, the Fire Department, the Environmental Military Police, and the Navy.
After an intense exchange of information between the institutions, the teams arrived by boat to approach the suspected vessel. Divers made their way to a compartment in the hull, located below the ship’s waterline, known as the ‘sea chest.’ The location is used to control the entry and exit of water in vessel systems.
The poor visibility of the water proved to be the most difficult challenge faced by the team, and as a result, the operation took the entire day to be completed. Nevertheless, the divers discovered three sports bags containing 130 kg of cocaine inside the compartment.
The ship was routed to Belgium, where traffickers’ divers would make the withdrawal. According to the Santos Customs Office, this type of trafficking has become more common throughout the world and is distinguished by the complexity with which it is carried out. During the operation, no one was arrested.
