USDA: China’s chicken imports are expected to rise 2% in 2022

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) attaché in Beijing expects Chinese chicken imports to total 800,000 tons in 2022, up 2% from 2021. The estimate does not include chicken feet. The attaché said the projection reflects an expected reduction in domestic production.

According to the attaché, chicken meat production in China may fall 3% in 2022, to 14.3 million tonnes. Domestic consumption may also drop by around 3% to 14.6 million tonnes, partly due to lower pork prices.

On the other hand, chicken meat exports are expected to be similar to the 2021 figures; that is, 460,000 tonnes. USDA believes this is due to restrictions imposed on the foodservice sector in Hong Kong and Japan in response to the covid-10 pandemic.
