A police operation seized more than 400 kilos of pure cocaine from Brazil at the port of Genoa Prà, Italy, on Monday 7th.
According to the authorities, the drug was located in a container on board the MSC Adelaide vessel and would net the traffickers around 30 million euros.
The seizure was carried out as part of an operation coordinated by Genoa Anti-Mafia District Directorate prosecutor Federico Manotti. A 50-year-old Culmv worker was arrested when he was caught picking up bags full of the drug.
The cocaine, divided into 400 tablets, was hidden in 14 bags inside a container loaded with coffee inside the MSC ship last Sunday (6), where a crewman was discovered dead with his throat slit. There is no link between the two cases, according to investigators.
Since then, the authorities placed the “suspicious” containers in a surveillance area of the port terminal, with a handling ban. However, at night, a man carried a box to an area with no cameras.
DDA investigators reported that the drug was intended for organized crime. In mid-January, another 412 kilos of cocaine were seized at the port of La Spezia, in a container from the Dominican Republic, bound for the port of Valencia.
