APM Terminals Pecém announces investment worth R$ 150 million

The Pecém terminal will receive four large pieces of equipment in the upcoming months for use in the 2022 harvest. In total, the Terminal acquired three rubber tyre gantry cranes (RTGs) and one ship-to-shore crane (STS).

Daniel Rose, administrative director of the Pecém Terminal, explained that these investments aligned with the company’s strategy that followed the Terminal’s development over the years. “We have always been advocates for the potential of the Northeast region. Thus, we want to keep up with the region’s growth pace and be ready to serve our customers better,” he says.

The good yearly performance of the Terminal, alongside optimistic projections for the future, justifies the recent purchases. Pecém is one of the main outlets for fruit production in the country and records growth in all senses. In 2020, amid the pandemic, it grew 9.6% compared to 2019. In 2021, until November, it had already registered movement of 384 thousand TEUs, 10% more compared to the same period of 2020. In 2022, the numbers should reach 470 thousand TEUs.

Expanded infrastructure

APM Terminals Pecém currently operates two STS cranes. With the arrival of the third crane, productivity will skyrocket, making it possible to operate two ships simultaneously. The new STS crane is being built in China and will be able to handle vessels with up to 22 rows. The arrival date is expected to be in the second half of 2022.

The RTGs purchased are new models, and they will be the first of their kind to operate in Pecém. Currently, Reach Stackers, which will be replaced by the new cranes, handle the containers in the yard.

The use of RTGs represents several advantages, such as productivity gains given that the cranes move over the stacks of containers, facilitating access to the containers positioned in the middle of the blocks and reducing the number of maneuvers needed to operate the stacks as a whole while also improving the logistics of the operation.

In addition, the models acquired for Pecém are electrified and do not use diesel fuel. As a result, the operation is cleaner and more sustainable, emitting fewer CO² into the atmosphere.

To meet the growing demand for refrigerated cargo, which is critical to the Terminal, the number of reefer outlets will be increased from 1,088 to 1,388 in the coming months.

The port will invest approximately R$ 2.5 million in security. For example, a second scanner – which will start operating soon – was acquired to inspect containers, yielding total investments of more than R$ 250 million over the last ten years at APM Terminals Pecém.
