Ukraine suspends wheat, barley and rye exports

According to a cabinet resolution published on Wednesday (March 09), Ukraine’s government has suspended rye, barley, wheat, millet, and salt exports until the end of the year. According to international agencies, new rules for exporting corn, buckwheat, sugar, live cattle, and meat have also been established.

The suspension is intended to avoid a “humanitarian crisis in Ukraine,” stabilize the market, and “meet the population’s needs for critical food products,” according to Roman Leshchenko, Ukraine’s Minister of Agrarian and Food Policy, in a statement posted on the government’s website and Facebook page.

Russia and Ukraine account for nearly a third of global wheat and barley exports, skyrocketing prices since the Moscow-ordered invasion. According to Reuters, the Ukrainian government will issue licenses for non-suspended product shipments the day after they are requested.

Before Russia’s invasion, Ukraine had announced that it expected to export 60 million tonnes of grain in this 2021/22 harvest, including 33 million tonnes of corn and 23 million tonnes of wheat.

As of February 23, the country’s Ministry of Agriculture reported that Ukraine had already exported 43 million tonnes of grains in 2021/22.
