Stolthaven Santos and Pecém team up to develop a Green Hydrogen Hub

Stolthaven Terminals and the Pecém Industrial Port Complex, a joint venture formed by the Government of the State of Ceará and the Port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands, announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that provides for a new storage terminal at the Port of Pecém. The terminal will provide storage and handling services for green hydrogen and related products.
The new partnership was announced after the visit of Danilo Serpa, CEO of the Pecém Complex, and Fábio Abreu, director of engineering, to the Port of Santos, on March 14th.
The Port of Pecém is located in Ceará and has great potential for generating wind and solar energy, essential for producing green hydrogen. The Export Processing Zone (ZPE in Portuguese) is fully integrated with the port, which, in turn, is connected to an extensive gas distribution network.
The Port of Rotterdam, as Europe’s largest port, is well-positioned to give vital information and knowledge since it is already preparing to serve as Europe’s green hydrogen hub. A bonded ammonia warehouse, a raw ingredient used in hydrogen manufacturing, is one of the proposals for the Pecém terminal.
Launched in February 2021 by Pecém Industrial Complex, the Federation of Ceará State Industries (FIEC), and the Federal University of Ceará (UFC), the Green Hydrogen Hub (H2V) project aims to transform Ceará into a major global supplier of the sustainable fuel, contributing to the decarbonization of the planet.
