Soybean exports are expected to increase by 24% at the Port of Santos

Soybean exports and exports of soy bran through the Port of Santos are expected to grow 24.4% this year compared to 2021, from 23.3 million to 29 million tonnes, according to the Santos Port Authority (SPA).
The first two months of 2022 reveal an upward trend among exports: compared to the same period in 2021, shipments increased 67.8%, from 3.301 million tonnes to 5.539 million. Soybean shipments also grew in the last two years (21 million tonnes in 2020, an increase of 12% compared to 2019; and 23.3 million tonnes in 2021, also a growth of 12% compared to the previous year).

“The constant increase in soybean shipments, as well as other grains produced in Brazil, is possible thanks to the investments done in the Port of Santos to secure the outflow of these products to foreign markets,” says SPA.
Record-breaking corn
Corn exports, which, compared to 2021, increased by 107% in January and February this year, may also reach new highs in Santos. However, if, on the one hand, larger amounts of soybeans and corn can bring added value to the port, it may also, on the other hand, lead to chaotic traffic jams as recently occurred at the Cônego Doménio Rangoni road in Guarujá.
“The goal is to decrease the participation of trucks as soon as possible to make the use of railroads predominant [in grain transportation]. However, such a transition will not happen this year. Therefore, if the increase in corn supply is confirmed, or even if soybean supply remains the same as last year, the situation will worsen,” says port consultant Fabrizio Pierdomenico.
José Roque, the executive director of the Union of Maritime Navigation Agencies of the State of São Paulo (Sindamar), assessed that an increase in corn volume might lead to longer vessel line-ups, particularly in June and July, when soybeans compete for space with corn and sugar is still plentiful.

Brazil’s harvests
As opposed to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), which released a forecast on April 7, the National Association of Cereal Exporters (Anec) does not believe that the Brazilian grain harvest will yield 258.9 million tonnes in 2022 and have a record harvest.
That is because bad weather conditions have impacted soybean plantations. However, the “failure of the soybean crop” occurred mainly in Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná and Mato Grosso do Sul. Thus, failed crops should not impact the Port of Santos because the soybeans exported from there come from Mato Grosso.
Nonetheless, Anec’s executive director, Sérgio Mendes, believes that the corn will boost traffic at the Santos pier this year. “Santos is the port that exports the most corn in Brazil, and the super winter crop in Mato Grosso may set a new record. Santos is where nearly half of Brazil’s corn exports leave the country.”
