Antaq will listen to ports to find solutions to the container crisis

The National Waterway Transportation Agency (Antaq) will hold a round table session with port terminals to look for a way to mitigate the effects of the current container crisis that the world has been facing since the beginning of the pandemic.

The container shortage is partially caused by stoppages in factories around the world and other logistical issues. The effects have also reached Brazil, although the country is responsible for only 1% of the movement of containers in the international market.

In total, 12 port terminals have already provided information on the operation implications they are facing.

According to sources, one of the leading causes of the problem in Brazil is vessel omissions, which occur when ships “skip” a port call to make delivery dates. By not stopping at a port, the vessels disrupt the overall distribution strategy by leaving their containers full and transporting the empty ones to other areas.

The constant delays in loading and unloading cargo have also been identified as a problem.

Meetings with cabotage and long-haul shipowners, the specialists in charge of organizing the logistics of national and international freight, are also planned so that the agency has a better understanding of the navigation challenges that have impacted the sector.
