China eliminates coal import tariffs

China announced on Thursday the elimination of tariffs on coal imports, a move that is likely to increase CO2 emissions from the world’s biggest emitter of greenhouse gases. The world’s most populous country pledged in 2020 to cut carbon emissions by 2030, but 56% of its energy balance remains based on coal, a climate-damaging energy source.
China’s Customs Administration announced the suspension of coal imports from May 1 to March 31, 2023. The tariffs levied on imported coal are currently 3% to 6%. The measure is adopted to “ensure the country’s energy supply and its development,” says a statement.
China announced the resumption of coal production and instructed its miners to produce “all the coal possible” after experiencing an electrical shortfall in previous months. In 2021, the country also began constructing coal-fired power plants. Last year, the world’s second-largest economy increased its coal usage by 4.9%.
