Brazil to reopen markets to Argentine apples and pears

The Argentine Minister of Agribusiness has confirmed that Senasa (Argentina’s National Health and Agricultural Food Quality Service) has reached an agreement with Brazilian officials to lift the ban on entry of Argentine pears, apples, and quinces to Brazil. The fruit is mainly from Argentina’s Rio Negro Valley and Neuquen regions. DatamarNews reported that Brazil intercepted nine Argentine fruit trucks due to the discovery of Carpocapsa moths in the cargo earlier this year.
Although the president of the Federation of Producers of Rio Negro and Neuquen believes the closure was politically motivated, the Brazilian government are taking serious preventative measures against possible Carpocapsa outbreaks. Brazil is working with Senasa to evaluate the organisation’s proposals to increase pest control measures. According to Fresh Plaza, industry specialists believe that 500 of a total of 1,200 officially recognised producers already adhere to all the proposed control regulations.
Senasa has fined several exporters responsible for the pest problems, such as Fruta Sensación and MVC SA and the firms Full Lemu, Marisel Martinez SRL, Manso Rio SRL, Teorema SRL and Frigorífico Cinco Saltos SA.
