Brazil’s Navy preemptively closed the access to the ports of Itajaí and Navegantes due to a subtropical cyclone

Once again, the Brazilian Navy banned navigation in the access channel of the Port Complex of Itajaí and Navegantes on Tuesday, May 17. This is the second time the canal has been preemptively closed due to bad weather in the region. The last time it was due to rain.
The access channel was closed due to the strong winds hitting the region and making the channel impossible to sail. A subtropical cyclone has now hit the area, and wind gusts can reach 100 km/h.
With no entries or exits of vessels from the ports of Itajaí and Navegantes, importers and exporters are trying to calculate the losses inflicted by the halted operations in recent weeks. Due to an increase in the current and water level of the Itajaí-Açu River following heavy rains, the canal was closed for six days.
According to Ricardo Amorim, General Director of Logistics Operations at the Port of Itajaí, it is not currently possible to speak of values and losses. Still, he believes that this stoppage impacts the entire production chain of foreign trade.
“We are part of a very large logistics and foreign trade chain. [Halted operations] bring about losses for exporters and importers who cannot sell their products or receive raw materials. In addition, we are talking about terminals that cannot operate ships, which will start to hold on to too many cargoes since vessels are not coming into the port,” he said.
Without the free flow of ships, especially for those docked and unable to leave, the occupation of the terminals increases, and operations grow more complex.
