Textile exports grew 29,61% in the first four months of 2022

According to information compiled by the Brazilian Textile and Apparel Industry Association (Abit), exports equaled US＄396.3 million in the first four months of 2022, an increase of 29.61% compared to the same period in 2021. The upward movement was driven by the rise in sales to neighboring countries, such as Argentina (+36.2%), Colombia (+61.64%), and Peru (+56.8%).

Imports grew by 9.82%, reaching US＄1.89 billion. The increase was driven by the average price of foreign products in the period (+38.9%) and by the increased purchases of clothing, which went from 28% to 35% of the imported value.

Even though the expansion of purchases in the flow of international trade has been significantly smaller than the expansion of sales, the trade balance had a deficit of US$1.49 billion for the four-month period.

April-specific figures show a 5.83% growth in imports compared to the same month in 2021, reaching US＄369.1 million. So far, April was the month that recorded the lowest volume of imports in the year, 36.1% lower than in March 2022. Exports were US＄107.85 million, up 20.13%, also in comparison to 2021.

Clothing

Clothing imports totaled US＄576.9 million, up 42.56% from the first four months of 2021. However, in April alone, imports were worth US＄97.2 million, making it the month with the least clothing imports in 2022, a drop of 53.5% compared to March.

Apparel exports in the four months reached US＄58.2 million, an increase of 43.61%. In April, they were US＄17.4 million, up 35.81% from the same month in 2021.

Volume

Compared to last year’s four-month period, imports from the textile and apparel industry reached 473,441 tonnes, down 20.96%. In April, they reached 97,857 tonnes, representing a reduction of 14.51%. On the other hand, exports in the four months totaled 70,776 tonnes, and, in April, 17,197 tonnes, increasing 9.26% and 13.77%, respectively.
