Global coffee exports recede by 3% in April

Global coffee exports totaled 10.92 million bags in April, receding 3% from a year earlier, reported the International Coffee Organization (ICO) on June 06.
In the first seven months of the current coffee year (October 2021 to April 2022), shipments were mainly in line with the same period in the last commercial year. The increase was only 0.6%, to 78.01 million bags.
Arabica coffee exports reached 80.47 million bags in the past 12 months (until April 2022), a volume 3% lower than the same period last season. On the other hand, Robusta beans shipments grew 4.4% in the same period and reached 49.54 million bags.
Future projections
In its May report, the ICO once again kept its coffee production and consumption projections for the current crop unchanged. According to the entity’s calendar, the harvest should yield 167.2 million bags of 60 kilos in the 2021/22 cycle, which started in October. The volume is 2.1% lower than the previous season.
Global coffee consumption, in turn, is expected to grow 3.3% to 170.3 million 60-kilogram bags. In this cycle, consumption should exceed production by 3.1 million bags, a projection that has affected prices on international exchanges where the commodity is traded.
